Al‑Abbasiyeen Stadium is a large, multi‑purpose sports venue in Damascus, long regarded as one of Syria’s most prominent football grounds. Before its closure, it regularly hosted top‑flight domestic matches and major internationals, with a seated capacity around 30,000 following its 2011 renovation. It suits sports historians, urban explorers, and anyone documenting Damascus’s sporting infrastructure rather than casual visitors looking for an operating arena.

The stadium sits just southeast of Abbassiyeen Square on the city’s east‑central side. Although sometimes referenced in association with Barzeh, it is not in Masakin Barzeh; it lies several kilometers to the south of Barzeh’s neighborhoods. Given its current, long‑term closure and war damage, it is not an active visitor attraction, but it remains a significant landmark in Damascus’s sporting memory.

Opened in 1957 as an athletics ground, Al‑Abbasiyeen Stadium was expanded and modernized for the 1976 Pan Arab Games, then refurbished again in 2011 when it became an all‑seater of about 30,000. It has hosted high‑profile moments, including a papal Mass by Pope John Paul II on May 6, 2001. Since the Syrian conflict, the venue has been closed (reported since 2013) and suffered damage; multiple reports documented military use and deterioration. Public discussion in recent years has alternated between demolishing, investing in, or restoring the site, but no definitive redevelopment decision has been implemented to date.
