Al‑Rukniyah Madrasa and Mosque is a small Ayyubid‑era religious complex in Damascus, combining a historic madrasa, a prayer hall, and the domed tomb of its founder. Architecturally modest but atmospheric, it features geometric stonework and inscriptions around the north portal and a ribbed dome over the mausoleum. It now serves as a neighborhood mosque.
The monument stands in the al‑Salihiyah/Rukn al‑Din area on the lower slopes of Mount Qasioun, northwest of the Old City. Despite some modern restoration, including a rebuilt minaret, the site retains its medieval plan and is typically accessible to worshippers at prayer times. It suits travelers and researchers interested in Islamic architecture, Ayyubid Damascus, and quieter community mosques beyond the main tourist circuit.
Note: Some sources and map listings place the madrasa in al‑Salihiyah/Rukn al‑Din rather than Masakin Barzeh; Masakin Barzeh is a separate district further northeast.
التاريخ
Founded in 1224 CE by the Ayyubid official Rukn al‑Din Mankurs al‑Falakī, the complex originally functioned as a teaching institution with an attached mosque and the patron’s tomb. It underwent substantial restoration in 1985 by the Syrian religious authorities, and the minaret visible today is a modern reconstruction based on the historic form.
