Maqam al-Arba’in (Shrine of the Forty) is a hilltop shrine reached by a strenuous stair climb on Mount Qasioun above Damascus. The route is best known for its long staircase — often cited as roughly 700–750 uneven steps — that begins near the Sheikh Muhyiddin Ibn Arabi area by al-Maysat and rises to one of the mountain’s highest points, rewarding climbers with sweeping, postcard views over the city once they reach the green-domed shrine.

The climb suits fit walkers, pilgrims, and sunrise/sunset photographers who don’t mind a sustained ascent. Expect basic conditions: the steps vary in height and width, and the path can feel exposed; sturdy shoes and water are advisable. Many visitors also come simply to enjoy the panorama from Mount Qasioun, whether they approach by vehicle partway or tackle the full stair route.

What it’s known for: panoramic city vistas, a demanding but iconic stair climb from the urban edge into the mountains, and a revered place of devotion associated with the “Forty” righteous.

The shrine crowns Mount Qasioun, long regarded as a sacred mountain in Damascus. Local tradition links the mount and nearby Cave of Blood to the primordial story of Abel and Cain, and the maqam itself is associated with the “Forty Saints” (al-Abdal). Inside, accounts describe numerous prayer niches tied to this veneration. Over centuries the site has drawn Damascenes and visitors for devotion and reflection as well as for its commanding overlook of the city.
